Ah, spring. The flowers are beginning to bloom, the birds are chirping, and it’s (probably) done snowing.

But as new life returns to the Oskaloosa area and the days grow longer, spending time outdoors also becomes more common.

And more fun.

So if you’re in our neck of the woods in Iowa, here are some ways you can get out there, and see all of what Oskaloosa has to offer.

Go for a Bike Ride

Of all the great ways to explore the outdoors, bike riding is easily one of the best. You can bike at a pace that suits you best, and cover as much or as little ground as you’d like.

Between trails in town and bike paths in local parks, there’s a wide variety of routes and scenery to choose from.

The best biking trail in town may be the Mahaska County Recreational Trail, with almost 14 miles of smooth riding. The trail loops around Oskaloosa and winds through scenic woodlands, agricultural fields, a number of parks, two golf courses, and unique underpasses.

So what are you waiting for? Get pedaling!

Go Fishing

There’s nothing quite like throwing a line in the water and relaxing by the shore. And in Oskaloosa, there are so many great places to go fishing.

Between the Lake Keomah and Russell Wildlife area, there’s miles of tree-lined shores to fish from.

Lake Keomah holds bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and more. In the wildlife area, you’ll find five quarry ponds which offer anglers the chance to catch bass, catfish, and bluegills. Small boats, canoes and kayaks are permitted on all of the ponds.

Regardless of what you’re hoping to catch, it’s always a good time on the water.

Search for Wildlife

Contrary to popular belief, Iowa isn’t just flat farmland. Among these woodlands and grasslands are ecosystems buzzing with life, you just have to take the time to look.

From Russell Wildlife Area to the local state parks, there are hundreds of acres to be explored.

Keep the camera handy. You may spot anything from deer and waterfowl to rabbits and birds throughout the parks and nature areas.

Enjoy a Hike

In addition to the chance of seeing wildlife, there are some fantastic hiking trails to be explored in the locations listed above.

Looking for something a little less ambitious?

Take a walk along the boardwalks or paved trails found in one of the many local state parks. Who knows, you may even stop and enjoy a picnic in one of the many local parks.

Find a Camping Spot

By the river. By a lake. In the woods. In town. Close to town. Wherever you choose, Oskaloosa has no shortage of camping spots and electrical hook-ups.

Whether you’re a traditional tent camper or a radical RV’er, you’re sure to find a spot you love.

Whatever outdoor activities you like to enjoy, we hope you can get outside and explore all that the Oskaloosa area has to offer.

Between fishing, camping, and hiking, we believe there’s truly something for everyone to love. And hey, if you can’t find a camping spot you love, or need a few more creature comforts, we’re here for you. You’re welcome at the lodge any time.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get out there!
