Ah, spring. The flowers are beginning to bloom, the birds are chirping, and it’s soon to be done snowing (hopefully). But as new life returns to the Bismarck area and the days grow longer, spending time outdoors also becomes more common.

So, if you’re in our neck of the woods in central North Dakota, here are some ways you can get out there and see all that Bismarck has to offer.

  1. Go for a Bike Ride

Of all the great ways to explore the outdoors, bike riding is easily one of the best. You can bike at a pace that suits you best and cover as much or as little ground as you’d like. Between trails in town and bike paths in local parks, there’s a wide variety of routes and scenery to choose from.

The highlight of bike trails in Bismarck can be found in the scenic paved trails on both sides of the Missouri River, with a simple route and a gorgeous view.

  1. Go Fishing

There’s nothing quite like throwing a line in the water and relaxing by the shore. And in Bismarck, there are so many great places to go fishing. Between the mighty Missouri River and the fantastic guide services available in town, you’ll be sure to land a great catch.

Although North Dakota is known for its walleye, you also may find northern pike, bass, perch, and even catfish. Regardless of what you’re hoping to catch, it’s always a good time on the water.

  1. Search for Wildlife

Contrary to popular belief, North Dakota isn’t just flat farmland. Among these rivers and grasslands are ecosystems buzzing with life, you just have to take the time to look.

From Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park to McDowell Dam Nature Park, to the Dakota Zoo, there are hundreds of acres to be explored. Keep the camera handy, you may spot anything from deer and waterfowl to bison and prairie dogs throughout the parks.

  1. Enjoy a Hike

In addition to the chance of seeing wildlife, there are some fantastic hiking trails to be explored in the locations listed above. Take a walk along the boardwalks or paved trails found in one of the many local state parks. Whether you plan just a day trip or overnight visit, there’s plenty of hiking to discover.
